Chillingworth and Dimmesdale

Roger Chillingworth:
-Hester Prynne's husband hiding under a new persona inorder to separate himself from the shame of her act and to root out her lover whom he intends to ruin their soul (Chapter 4: The Interview).
-Becomes the town doctor. I find this interesting that he learned such a practice of concoting tonics from the Native Americans, yet they do not proclaim him a witch.
-He lives with Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale near the cemetary(ironic as Roger is suppose to be dead...) in a widows home, no doubt to investigate his suspicion of Arthur's waning health and refusal to marry any of the young towns women who devoted themselves to him.
-His room has a sophisicated laboratory for the time.
-Townspeople believe his arrive is a miracle.
-A majority of the townspeople begin to suspect that Chillingworth is the Devil, come to wage battle for Dimmesdale's soul.
- This is further explained when Pearl tells her mother to come away from the Black Man who has gotten the minister in referance to Chillingworth.
-Discovers something on Dimmesdale's chest that "delights" him. Birthmark shared by Pearl.

Arthur Dimmesdale:
-Arthur's room has biblical depictions of adultery and it's punishments.
-Chillingworth's greatest puzzle
-Dimmesdale has grown suspicious of all men and will confide in no one


Chillingworth represents “science” and Dimmesdale represents “spirituality.”
